ACE-2 Receptors, Quercetin & Coronavirus

Immune Booster and Broad-Spectrum Antiviral

Research has demonstrated that quercetin (a flavonoid antioxidant) is a powerful immune booster and broad-spectrum antiviral. As such, it may be useful both for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 infection.

Once in a cell, the coronavirus empties the RNA contents and hijacks the cell to start producing more viruses. Quercetin can help in stopping the virus from getting into the cells through ACE-2 receptor sites by hindering the virus.

A computer modeling study that has yet to be peer-reviewed also demonstrated that quercetin and other compounds also showed promise in blocking the SARS-CoV-2 novel coronavirus from entering cells (Khaerunnisa S, et al. Potential Inhibitor of COVID-19 Main Protease (Mpro) from Several Medicinal Plant Compounds by Molecular Docking Study. Preprints (www.preprints.org). https://doi.org/10.20944/preprints202003.0226.v1).

One of the issues recently discussed by scientists is that some of the most common blood pressure medications cause your body to make more ACE-2 receptors (caused upregulation). Receptors are gateways on our cells that allow substances to get into our cells. These receptors are involved in blood pressure control. Coronavirus hijacks these little receptors to gain cell entrance. If you try to block the ACE 2 receptors, your body will instruct the cells to make more ACE 2 receptors, which allows more virus to enter cells.  “There are concerns that some of the younger people perishing from this [COVID-19] disease maybe those with metabolic syndrome (overweight, lack of exercise, high triglycerides, and high blood pressure) who have been placed on ACE inhibitors or ARB blood pressure medications.” (https://regenexx.com/blog/coronavirus-episode-9-can-quercetin-help-covid-19/)

Take quercetin with vitamin C as it improves quercetin’s absorption. Doctors in NY city have been giving very ill patients with Coronavirus large doses of vitamin C via IV and seeing very positive results. China is currently running a Vitamin C study with 140 Covid19 patients but the results won’t be available until September. Meanwhile, vitamin C is safe and will only help your immune system.  Start with about 1000 mg and increase by 500 mg at a time until you reach bowel tolerance (loose stool). Then cut back by 500 mg. That is the amount your body needs at the time. The late Dr. Robert F Cathcart said: “I have not seen any flu yet that was not cured or markedly ameliorated by massive doses of vitamin C.”

Zinc supplementation (15 mg) is a preventative and therapeutic treatment for viral infections has shown promise in a number of studies. It should be used in conjunction with quercetin and vitamin C.

Natural Remedy for High Blood Pressure

Many studies have reported that there is evidence that the ingestion of fruits and vegetables could help in the prevention and in the non-medication food-based treatment of hypertension (Appel et al. 1997; Ferrara et al. 2000; Kokkinos et al. 2005). The antihypertensive potential of certain flavonoid-rich foods has been mainly assessed in relation to their capacity to inhibit the ACE, which has a fundamental role in regulating the blood pressure (Hackl et al. 2002; Actis-Goretta et al. 2003; Kwon et al. 2007b). Previous research showed that apples and others fruits and vegetables have phenolic bioactive factors that have the potential to contribute to the overall management of type 2 diabetes and its associated complications such as hypertension (Kwon et al. 2007aKwon et al. ,b, 2008 Barbosa et al. 2010 Barbosa et al. , 2011). …(https://www.researchgate.net/publication/11212043_Inhibition_of_Angiotensin-Converting_Enzyme_by_Quercetin_Alters_the_Vascular_Response_to_Bradykinin_and_Angiotensin_I)  Note: never just stop taking blood pressure medication. You and your doctor should work out a gradual decrease of the medication as you increase your veggies and fruit and drink celery and beet juice.
