Beets Detox the Liver

Beet juice can be highly beneficial for the liver due to its betaine. Betaine is the substance that encourages the liver cells to get rid of toxins. Additionally, betaine acts to protect the liver and bile ducts, which are important if the liver is to function properly. Beets are also known to decrease the risk of coronary and cerebral artery diseases because they lower inflammation.

Traditionally, beets have been linked to the healing of the liver, a decrease in homocysteine, an improvement in stomach acid production, prevention of the formation of free-radicals in LDL, and the prevention of lung, liver, skin, spleen, and colon cancer. Make note of its protective effect on LDL. It is not LDL per se that is harmful, but oxidized (damaged) LDL. These many health benefits are not all directly linked to liver detoxification, but they help the body to work more efficiently. Because the systems of the body are all intertwined and rely upon each other to work properly, this indirectly affects the ability of the liver to rid itself of toxins and continue to work at an optimal level. Besides juicing beets and making beet salad, you can bake, steam, or roast them.

  1. Do you have a recipe for beet salad that you share?

    • Yes, the beet salad is part of the cleansing program in my book Juicing, Fasting, and Detoxing for Life. You take beet pulp and add lemon/olive oil dressing. You could add a dash of cinnamon.
