Brown Fat…how to get more!

Do you have too much white fat and not enough brown fat? Brown fat actually helps you burn calories and sucks white fat out of the rest of the body. Brown fat can increase your metabolic set point.

Dr. George King says, “Unlike white fat—which makes up the vast majority of the fat in our bodies and is used to store any excess calories we consume—brown fat actually burns calories to produce heat (under the right conditions). In fact, when fully activated, brown fat generates three hundred times more heat than any other tissue in the body. Just two ounces of brown fat appear capable of burning several hundred calories per day—the equivalent of a 30-minute bout of exercise.”

Ways to Increase Brown Fat

  1. Apple peel. A new study shows that a natural substance found in apple peel can partially protect mice from obesity and some of its harmful effects.(https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/06/120620212855.htm) You can get more apple peel in your diet with smoothies like Cinnamon Swirl (see below), a recipe from Sipping Skinny, my latest book. You can sign up for my book and Sipping Skinny Weight Loss Program that starts a week from today.
  2. Don’t starve or stuff yourself? Researchers at the Yale School of Medicine found that in mice, brain neurons “can actually encourage fat to turn brown. Published in the journal Cell, researchers “found that eating too few calories prevented white fat from turning brown, while eating just enough to satisfy hunger—prompting the action of the neurons—turned white fat to turn brown.” (https://www.prevention.com/weight-loss/a20444117/how-to-increase-brown-fat/)
  3. One animal study published in the journal Disease Models and Mechanisms found that working out triggers the release of an enzyme called irisin that prompts white fat cells to convert to brown. (https://www.prevention.com/weight-loss/a20444117/how-to-increase-brown-fat/)
  4. Increase your melatonin production. research published in the Journal of Pineal Research found that in rats, it increases the presence of “beige” fat, which is similar to brown fat in its calorie-burning capabilities. While you might be tempted to take a supplement, experts say it’s best to stimulate your body’s own natural production by avoiding nighttime exposure to light from TVs, computers and other screens, getting sunlight exposure during the day, and loading up on melatonin-rich foods, including almonds, tomatoes, tart cherries, cardamom, and coriander. (https://www.prevention.com/weight-loss/a20444117/how-to-increase-brown-fat/)
  5. Turn down the thermostat. “The journal Diabetes published a notable study that proposes how a person’s stores of brown fat, the “good fat,” are stimulated by cooler temperatures, or simply by turning up the air conditioner. This burns through “bad” fat stores and assists in keeping us warm. Over a period of a few weeks, participants slept in bedrooms with various temperatures: a warm eighty-one degrees, a cool sixty-six degrees, and a mild-warm seventy-five degrees. Brown fat nearly doubled in the men who slept four weeks in sixty-six degrees. Now that’s cool!” (an excerpt from Sipping Skinny)
  6. Eat these healthy foods. The Mediterranean diet and traditional Japanese diets include foods, spices, and teas that activate brown fat. (http://knowledgeofhealth.com/cold-shower-hot-pepper-brown-fat-weight-control-plan/)
  7. Include a number of nutraceuticals that activate brown fat—garlic, red pepper, fish oil, curcumin (turmeric), fucoxanthin from seaweed, and green tea. (http://knowledgeofhealth.com/cold-shower-hot-pepper-brown-fat-weight-control-plan/)

    • Hi Carol, So nice to hear from you.The supplement on my website Thyrocsin has helped a lot of people. Also, coconut oil is very good for the thyroid. And foods rich in iodine such as sea vegetables, seaweed, dulse and kelp. You may also want to take iodine drops. Lugol’s is a good brand.

  3. This is an amazing concept and one that’s often overlooked. The miracle of brown fat is a gift from our Creator.
