Mystery Salad Dressing

What’s Really In Your Salad Dressing

You buy your favorite salad dressing and feel good about eating a salad. After all, you’re getting your vegetables. But what’s in that dressing? Does it say “made with extra virgin olive oil “ on the label. Is it really olive oil based?

Check it out more closely. It only needs a drop or two of olive oil to make this claim. The dressing may be mostly other oils that are much cheaper— canola oil, soybean oil, or vegetable oil like safflower or sunflower as the main ingredients. You may also be getting GMO products because about 90% of soy and rapeseed (canola) crops are GMO. These oils are extremely processed, and offer you inflammation-promoting omega-6 fatty acids. They can depress the immune system and contribute to weight gain. Even the all natural dressings found in the refrigerator section usually have these oils as their base. Many dressings also contain sugar—from cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup. And in most popular commercial dressings there are also artificial additives and preservatives. Buyer beware: Some food manufacturers add titanium dioxide nanoparticles – the same compound used to make sunscreen and brighten paints – to many foods as a colorant and thickener.

One commercial salad dressing I can recommend is Bragg’s Vinaigrette Salad Dressing.

These are the ingredients:

Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Bragg Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil, purified water, organic honey, organic garlic, Bragg Liquid Aminos, organic onion, and organic black pepper. Gluten Free. NON-GMO

You can also make your own salad dressing and be assured of your ingredients.
