Sugar Belly Blues

Increasingly, scientists are focusing on long-term over consumption of added sugars as contributing to heart disease, fatty liver, diabetes, some cancers, Alzheimer’s disease, aging, metabolic syndrome, and obesity.  A “sugar belly” is one of the obvious signs of metabolic syndrome.

Added sugar is hiding in foods that many of us consider healthy, like yogurt and energy bars. It is also added to savory foods, such as ketchup, breads, salad dressing and pasta sauce.

Here are some healthy-looking items you might find in the supermarket that also have high sugar contents:

– One leading brand of yogurt contains 7 teaspoons (29 grams) of sugar per serving.

– A breakfast bar made with “real fruit” and “whole grains” lists 15 grams of sugar.

– A single cup of bran cereal with raisins, in a box advertising “no high-fructose corn syrup,” contains 20 grams of sugar per serving.

– A cranberry/pomegranate juice product, also advertising “no high-fructose corn syrup” and “100% Vitamin C,” contains 30 grams of added sugar per 8 oz. serving. Some of the sugar is naturally occurring, but some of it has been added.

Recommended sweeteners:

  • Stevia (recommend Sweet Leaf Vanilla Creme)
  • Coconut nectar
  • Coconut sugar

  1. I use about 2 tbs of powdered goat milk a day in my smoothie. I would like to make goat milk yogurt, but the “yogurt” always results in a liquid consistency. I never add sugar to it. Do you have a tried and true method to make powdered goat milk yogurt?

  2. If you are new to juicing it may taste a llttie strong at first. To make it more tasty stick to lots of celery and cucumber, some spinach, and a carrot or piece of beet for sweetness. If necessary, add a small piece of green apple as well. Some lemon is great for including alkalinity, sweetness and flavor. Even though lemons are acidic, they turn alkaline when they are in your digestive system. The bottom line is that if you don’t like the taste, you are not going to drink it. If your mind is saying yuck then so is your body. So while you don’t want to load up on fruit because of the sugar, do what you need to do to be able to make it tasty.
