What if I told you that 70% of your immune system was in your gut?
Though it’s important to wash your hands more than ever these days, some of the best advice would be to improve your gut health. What you eat and drink has a huge influence on your gut health.
When food is broken down during digestion, your gut works very hard to absorb the nutrients from that food. Good bacteria found in your gut is also used to stimulate the development of T‑cells (lymphocytes), which are responsible for distinguishing your body’s cells and tissue from potentially harmful pathogens in your body. When there is an imbalance in your gut, an overgrowth of unhealthy bacteria can confuse your immune system causing it to start attacking your own cells. If your immune system is busy reacting to healthy cells, not only is it easier for you to get sick, it’s also harder for your body to recover. Maintaining a balance of gut bacteria and supporting digestive health is a real key to staying healthy and warding off viruses.
Your Gut and What You Eat
It is so important to eat a high-fiber diet. The veggies highest in fiber are your cruciferous vegetables—Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and broccoli. Eat at least 3 cups per week along with other high-fiber foods. This will help promote regular bowel movements. Include probiotic-rich foods such as sauerkraut, miso, and yogurt containing live and active cultures.
Avoid junk food and processed food. Also, don’t include additives such as artificial sweeteners, sugar, refined salt and polyunsaturated fats that can lead to digestive issues.
