New to juicing? Start here.

I’ve been doing this for a very long time, and I’ve heard just about every question there is.  Here are some of the things I’m asked most often to get you started, especially if you are new to juicing for health.

The basics of juicing for health

There is NOTHING quite like Fresh Juice on the face of the Earth. It is made from raw plants, which means that it has a high vibration. It’s LIVE food that is broken down so well it can go right into your cells to energize and renew your body. It comes from the earth. The little roots from the plants pull in minerals from the soil and with the help of the son, convert them into organic elements your body needs for your health.

If you want to heal your body or simply keep your sparkling health, juice is your answer.  There is NOTHING that compares with it, not even a green smoothie.

There are just a few things you’ll need to start juicing like a champ.

Get a good juicer you’ll enjoy using. I love my Nama juicer. It’s a masticating juicer also known as cold-press. It extracts the most juice from the produce that I’ve seen, and is easy to clean. I’ve actually saved money on produce. I used to spend double for veggies. For example, I now use 1 bunch of celery for 2 glasses of juice rather than 2 bunches for 2 glasses (made with the centrifugal juicer.) It’s well made and doesn’t take up a lot of space on the counter.

There Are Two Types of Juicers

Note: Some manufacturers call their blenders juicers. If a machine keeps all the produce in one container, it is a blender.

Centrifuge Juicer

Spins and bursts open the plant’s cells releasing the juice. Juice pours from one spout and the pulp is ejected into the pulp catcher. These juicers have a wide mouth so you don’t have to cut up most of the produce. Because of the fast spinning, more oxygen is introduced to the juice. This can destroy a few more nutrients. Most models are easy to clean

Cold Press (or Masticating) Juicer

Presses the produce and squeezes out the juice. Because of the pressing process, fewer nutrients are lost. The opening is smaller so you will need to cut produce into smaller pieces with the exception of the Nama J2, J3 and C2 juicers. Just put your produce in the upper chamber and the Nama juices for you . Some models are easy to clean; some involve more work

Start with good recipes.

If you’re new to juicing, get some good recipes. Otherwise, you might ditch the whole thing because the juice does not taste good.  I recommend these books to help you get started:

Juicing is the process of extracting liquid from fruits and vegetables, leaving behind the pulp, to create a concentrated juice that contains essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

Juicing can provide a convenient way to consume a variety of fruits and vegetables, offering a concentrated source of nutrients, antioxidants, and enzymes. It may support hydration, improve digestion, boost immunity, and aid in detoxification.

While juicing can be a convenient way to consume nutrients, it’s important to recognize that it may lack the fiber content found in whole fruits and vegetables. Fiber plays a crucial role in digestive health and can help regulate blood sugar levels. Therefore, it’s generally recommended to incorporate both juicing and whole fruits and vegetables into a balanced diet. That said, juice does contain soluble fiber which is very good for colon health.

If you juice mostly fruit, you can get too much fruit sugar.  Make sure to juice more vegetables and add fruit to flavor and sweeten a bit.

While juicing offers many benefits, it’s important to be aware of potential downsides. Juicing can be expensive, as it requires a significant amount of produce to yield a small amount of juice. Additionally, some juicing processes remove the fiber content from fruits and vegetables, which can impact digestive health if not supplemented with fiber-rich foods.

To start juicing, invest in a quality juicer and begin experimenting with different fruit and vegetable combinations. Aim to incorporate a variety of colors and types of produce to maximize nutrient intake. Start with simple recipes and gradually increase complexity as you become more familiar with juicing.

While it’s generally safe to juice every day, it’s important to listen to your body and monitor how it responds. Some people may experience digestive discomfort or changes in blood sugar levels when consuming large quantities of juice. It’s also crucial to maintain a balanced diet that includes a variety of whole foods alongside juicing.

While most fruits and vegetables are suitable for juicing, some may be more challenging to juice or have a bitter taste when juiced such as mustard greens. Examples include bananas, avocados, which won’t provide any juice and potatoes which are quite gritty when juiced. Additionally, it’s important to wash produce thoroughly and remove any seeds or pits before juicing.
Juicing is rich in antioxidants which help the body detoxify. Adding juice to your diet is a gentle way to start detoxifying the body. Short juice fasts can be helpful in detoxification.

Juicing with Heart

Juicing with Heart is a joining of my life’s work with my husband Fr. John’s work. This embodies what beautifully unfolds at our Juice & Raw Foods Retreats. We combine my passion and work with juicing, raw foods, and whole foods nutrition with my husband’s work with the heart as a psychotherapist. He’s a certified HeartMath provider and an Orthodox priest. Together we offer healing for spirit, soul, and body. I teach that what we eat and drink plays a huge part in our health. But I also know personally, and we have observed in our work with many people, that trauma and emotional pain can also cause ill health no matter how deeply it is buried. Often both body and soul need to be addressed in order for each of us to find wholeness.
