Happy People are Healthier People

Happy People are Healthier People

Happiness does not depend on outward things, but on the way we see them.

—Leo Tolstoy

Studies show that happy people are healthier, have lower blood pressure and stronger immune systems than less happy people.

At our retreats, Fr. John teaches about focusing on the positive core. He works on finding what is good at the heart of a person in a powerful way to build enthusiasm, momentum, and energy for personal change and growth. We each have a choice as to what we pay attention to. We have to deliberately focus on our positive core, which is defined as “wisdom, knowledge, successful strategies, positive attitudes, best practices, skills, aspirations, resources, and capabilities.” We live in a critical, problem-focused culture which influences us to think critically and to view ourselves and others critically. But when we begin to look for the good in others and ourselves, we become happier. When we are thankful for the good things in our lives no matter what is going on, we heal faster. And guess what! We are healthier overall.

Recently my mother-in-law had an injury and ended up with a hairline fracture in her foot. Relegated to a boot and a walker, life wasn’t easy for our 90-year-old Nana. But my husband kept encouraging her to focus on the good things around her and all the positive things in her life. In two days she progressed from the boot to a special shoe—much easier to navigate in. And just last evening we heard that her doctor called her his model patient because she was healing so fast.

There are many opportunities to focus on the negative—from a clerk who’s rather cold and rude to the many times we have to sit on hold waiting for someone to answer our call, to the person who cuts us off in traffic. We have so many opportunities to remind ourselves to look for the good. This takes extra effort when we’re angry or frustrated. But, remember: we get what we focus on. If we focus on the negative, we’ll get more of that. If we focus on the positive or what we want, we’ll engage our positive core and bring all these good things to life.

I encourage you to come to our Juice and Raw Foods Health and Healing Retreat where you’ll learn a lot more about the Positive Core Principle” in my husband’s classes “How to De-Stress and Live from a Happy Heart” and “Who Am I; What Is my Purpose.”

Today’s Recipe

Happy-Mood Morning

Fennel juice has been used as a traditional tonic to help the body release endorphins, the “feel-good” peptides from the brain into the bloodstream.  Endorphins help to diminish anxiety and fear and generate a mood of euphoria.

  • 4-5 carrots, well scrubbed, green tops removed, ends trimmed
  • 3 fennel stalks; include leaves and flowers
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1/2 apple (green is lower in sugar)
  • Handful spinach
  • 1-inch piece ginger root

Cut produce to fit your juicer’s feed tube.  Juice apple first and follow with other ingredients. Stir and pour into a glass; drink as soon as possible.

Serves 1-2
