Heal Your Thyroid

I’ve never had low thyroid problems until just recently when my adrenals became very stressed. The thyroid and adrenals are closely associated so my thyroid has shown a little distress. I’m working on both. And it seems that I’m not alone. According to the United States National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health, an estimated 27 million Americans suffer from thyroid disease and 13 million people go undiagnosed.  Besides stress, the following are the most common causes of thyroid problems:

  1. Deficiencies of iodine and selenium.
  2. Food sensitivities to gluten and A1 Casein (dairy) allergy
  3. Toxins—especially heavy metals and radiation exposure
  4. Hormone imbalances—cortisol too high from stress, too many carbs, not enough fat in the diet

Symptoms of Low Thyroid

  • Depression
  • Poor memory, absentmindedness
  • Feeling of deep gloom for no apparent reason
  • Irritability for no apparent reason
  • Chronic fatigue and weakness
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight
  • Hair loss or coarse, dry hair
  • Dry, rough skin
  • Intolerance to cold
  • Abnormal menstrual cycles
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Constipation
  • Muscle aches and cramps
  • Fluid retention or puffiness

How You Can Improve Thyroid Function

  1. Avoid all gluten and dairy. These foods can cause leaky gut syndrome which can contribute to inflammation of the thyroid gland. Only consume dairy from goats or sheep.
  2. Avoid BPA. Avoid all plastics with BPA.
  3. Increase your iodine if you are low. Take kelp tablets or liquid iodine. Watercress is one of the best vegetable sources of iodine. Studies show that watercress helps the thyroid.
  4. Increase selenium. Brazil nuts are an excellent source of selenium.
  5. Do a heavy metal detox. You can use a combination of Milk Thistle, Turmeric, Chlorella, and Cilantro.
  6. Ashwagandha can help reduce stress and support the adrenals and thyroid. See Vitality Renew.
  7. Avoid sugar, refined carbs and starches.

Thank you for the wonderful information. I love what you do. One fact that would be very helpful for your readers is that people with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis should not take iodine. I have it myself and my anti thyroid antibodies went through the roof when I started taking iodine. So in some cases iodine is not a good choice. I thought that might be helpful info for this sub population of thyroid patients.
    Thanks for alll you do!
    With Gratitude…

  3. Sheri,

I’ve written to you a few times in the past. I finally found out EXACTLY what I’ve been plagued with for 36 years of my life. This is it. AND I have been dealing with it right at this very moment.

In 2014, I had a partial removal of my colon and they took my gallbladder… Cause you don’t need one those right… I’m kidding. When I had the attack, I went the emergency immediately and had the surgery. I asked the doctor, “What can I eat now”. He said anything, your fine… I knew he didn’t know what he was talking about or lying. It’s been 2 1/2 years later. I turned 50 in December and started going through menopause. I never did change my diet for monetary reasons. I could never work a full time job. I’ve been on disability for 16 years. I get next to nothing for it because I’m married. I’m a research junkie so I’ve searched high and low. I’ve lived in Whole Foods for the last 13 years, gleaning from them as well. They helped me three times in my life with horrible symptoms of physical issues or I’d be dead by now from the ailments or a gun… Tired emotionally from being depressed from no energy. Then a miracle happened, I got A JOB at Whole Foods !!! I’ve been there for a month. The knowledge is vast. They put in a makeup bar like in Macy’s and I’m a former Makeup Artist, so I fit the slot ! Glory to God !!! BUT, it’s been the internet that has got me up to snuff to this point. I am TEXT BOOK as far as this doctor’s info claimed. I had menstrual issues at 14, they gave me birth control. He claims that the Birth control from too much estrogen caused the thyroid issue. I’ve been taking antibiotics since the age of 12. In my early 20’s I started loosing my hair. I had to take hair pills off and on for 30 years. I’ve always taken vitamins, so I looked well. Now because of all the years of estrogen dominance and abuse from antibiotics I acquired leaky gut. I have a ridiculous amount of stress throughout my entire life. As you know, everyone thinks people with these issues were nuts to begin with… Not that it made us nuts. Foggy thinking, depression, etc. Power struggles with over -achievers when you were just trying to make a difference in the world that really mattered instead of superficiality… So, I survived all that crap ! But now I’m ready to kick it to the curb and see what The Lord has in store for the remainder of this journey… Go Bless You and Thank you for your gift to us…

    • Wow what a journey. Kick it to the curb is right. You survived and now you can help many other people.
