Fasting is an excellent way to lose weight and cleanse the body of toxins, but it is much more than that.

Its virtues have been extolled for centuries by nearly every religious practice as a way to connect to something higher and more significant than one’s self and the needs of the body. Fasting will make you feel lighter, happier, healthier, and more focused. The air will seem clearer, colors brighter, and sights and sounds sharper and more beautiful.

Fasting literally means abstaining from all or certain types of food and drink. It can mean a lot of different things such as fasting from sugar, alcohol, coffee, meat, or whatever else one chooses to give up. There are many types of fasts and methods of fasting.  The one I recommend is vegetable juice fasting.

Why Juice Fasting Helps Us Look Younger and Trimmer

Each of the trillions of cells in our body has a permeable membrane that enables it to take in nutrients and excrete waste. Cell membranes often become hardened, or rigid, thus the cells cannot properly excrete toxins that were previously trapped within them. Much of the reason for cell wall rigidity is because of the acidity of toxic waste that is caused by eating too much acid-producing food, constant stress, negative thoughts and emotions, and environmental toxins. The acidity in the fluids surrounding the cells changes them and they become hardened.

When the cells are not properly able to excrete the build-up of toxic and acidic waste, this condition affects their ability to produce energy. This is because the mitochondria, little structures within the cells that generate ATP (a form of chemical energy) become much less efficient at their assigned task of producing energy. The result is that we feel tired, worn-out, and lethargic and start looking older.

Along comes vegetable juice fasting to the rescue. It alkalizes the cells and the surrounding fluids so they can dump waste, while supplying antioxidant nutrients that help to neutralize the toxins. Fasting restores alkaline balance and enables cell walls to return to their ideal, permeable state. Once the cell membranes are softened, the process of dumping wastes is accelerated. Now the cells can again function at peak efficiency, something they may not have been able to do for many years.

Alkalizing and cleansing your body also helps you lose weight. The body is very intelligent. As we become more and more acidic, it sets up defense mechanisms to keep the damaging acid from entering our vital organs. We know that acid gets stored in fat cells. After all, if the acid comes into contact with our organs, it can damage tissue and cause cells to mutate. Also, the oxygen level drops in an acidic environment, which sets up an environment for cancer cells to thrive. And calcium becomes be depleted in an acidic environment, which is a set-up for osteoporosis.

So as a defense mechanism, your body may actually make fat to protect you from an overly acidic internal environment. Those fat cells and cellulite deposits (that lumpy, bumpy orange peel skin) may actually be packing up the acid to keep it at a safe distance from your organs. When your body starts dumping toxins, it can also let go of fat because it doesn’t need it anymore. And, voila! Fat just seems to melt away–sometimes quite rapidly. This fat loss may not be due as much to reduction in calories as it is to flushing away acidic waste. This truly is an “eat and grow thin” possibility.

Sample Menu

This menu can be modified to suit your individual needs and tastes. You can follow this program for one, two, three days, or more. If you’re doing the modified juice fast, you can take any of these juices, put them in your blender and add an avocado. This will make a great cold soup that is delicious and sustaining.

The Breakfast Zinger

3-4 medium carrots

1 small beet with leaves

1/2 cucumber

1/2 small or medium lemon (peeled if not organic)

1/2 to 1-inch piece fresh ginger root

1/2 green apple (optional)

Juice the carrots, beet, cucumber, lemon, and ginger. If you decide to use apple, remember that it will add extra fruit sugar (avoid if diabetic or hypoglycemic). Cut the apple into pieces and feed into the juicer tube after the ginger.

Stir the juice, and pour into a glass. Serve at room temperature or chilled.
