How many times have you complained about how tired you are but have done nothing about it? Have you been frustrated with the number of hours you are working, but fail to give yourself a rest? Feeling congested?  Out of sorts? You need to cleanse your body.

Here are 3 great reasons why taking a vacation is good for your health. (2)

            1. Greater productivity. In our rush to do it all and get it all done, we actually can diminish our ability to perform at peak levels. It takes continued focus and energy to consistently be productive. “Ernst & Young conducted an internal study of its employees and found that for each additional 10 hours of vacation time employees took, their year-end performance ratings improved 8 percent. What’s more, frequent vacationers were significantly less likely to leave the firm. Another study by the Boston Consulting Group found that high-level professionals who were required to take time off were significantly more productive overall than those who spent more time working.” When you are more efficient at getting things done, you’re happier, and when you’re happier, you excel at what you do.

            2. Improved sleep. With a lot on our minds, we can experience restless nights and disrupted sleep. When we simply can’t stop the mind chatter, our sleep is affected. This leads to less focus, being less alert, impaired memory, increased likelihood of accidents, and weakened immune system. “Researchers say that vacations can help interrupt the bad habits that disrupt sleep, like working late into the night or watching a computer screen before bed. If you have stress from work and you find your sleep is disrupted because of anxiety or tension, take time off and reset your sleep pattern.” I’ve certainly learned about this one recently. I’ve been much more productive just taking Sundays off.

            3. Stress reduction. “A study released by the American Psychological Association concluded that vacations work to reduce stress by removing people from the activities and environments that they associate with stress and anxiety. Similarly, a Canadian study of nearly 900 lawyers found that taking vacations helps alleviate job stress. The effects last beyond the duration of the vacation, too.  Also, a small study from the University of Vienna found that after taking time off from work, vacationers had fewer stress-related physical complaints such as headaches, backaches, and heart irregularities, and they still felt better five weeks later.”
