March Detox Contest

The winds are blowing. We just rolled our clocks forward. Spring is virtually here! And spring is one of the best times to cleanse your body.

If you look at Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is the best time to detoxify the body—specifically the liver. The primary biological reason is that nature supports cleansing the body during the spring season. As spring approaches, most people notice changes in their sleep and eating habits, along with their energy levels, mood, and even their senses. As these changes take place, the organs of the body are ready for cleanse, so any efforts to detox the liver and other organs are enhanced. Historically, people would eat lighter and would include wild foods such as nettles, dandelion and sorrel in the spring, which cleanse the liver and other organs of elimination.

Healing for Heel Pain

One of the interesting benefits of the Watercress Soup Diet was that two of the volunteers in my Watercress Soup Diet study got rid of their Plantar Fasciitis along with some extra pounds. Michell noticed that the pain was kept at bay when she ate the watercress soup and came back when she went on vacation and didn’t have any watercress for awhile. When she began eating this vegetable again, her pain went away.

5 Ways to Tame Your Sweet Tooth

5 Ways to Tame Your Sweet Tooth

Do you like your glass of wine before dinner, your dinners to be accompanied by dessert and your occasional doughnut—or cookie from that corner bakery that you love. But, if you sweet tooth is getting the best of you and you health is suffering as a result, or your waistline is expanding, or your skin is rebelling against your sugar intake with small clusters of blemishes, then it might be high time to curb your sugar habit.

Even if you aren’t a “sugar fiend” by definition, it is likely that your diet still consists of foods and beverages that are packed with sugar without your knowledge (think: orange juice, “natural” fruit chews, and countless other packaged foods you eat on the go.) If weight gain, poor health, or skin breakouts aren’t enough to convince you to slow your sugar intake, then maybe these recent finds will: recently, the British Journal of Sports Medicine referenced a study that found that too much sugar may lead to or trigger “brain disease, liver disease and breast cancer.” Nutritionist, Cherie Calbom asserts that, “the toxicity of excessive sugar consumption is well-documented, yet it’s so prevalent in our packaged foods that we may be digesting it without knowing it.” If you’re in need of a sugar detox, here are the top 5 tips for cutting back.

  1. Pick the right day to start. A birthday or celebration dinner is not the best time to commit to a new diet. You’ll eventually develop the willpower to navigate through special events, but it’s not a good idea to start with an unusual challenge.
  2. Go cold turkey. Studies show sugar is as addictive as cocaine and heroin, so it’s not something you can ease into or pursue in half measures. If you eat a little less to gradually eliminate it from your diet, you’ll keep getting triggered into wanting more sweets. You have to completely let it go.
  3. Scrutinize every label. We are naturally inclined to crave sugar, which is why manufacturers try to smuggle it into their products. The only way to root out sugar in all its forms – soups, condiments, breads, etc. – is to read grocery labels carefully. The sooner sugar is mentioned, the more that’s in there.
  4. Make emergency snack packs. Whether shopping, traveling or at work, you don’t want to be caught hungry without a healthy option. Plummeting blood-sugar levels will make it that much harder to resist sugar-laden treats. Nuts and seeds, veggie sticks, turkey jerky and apples are among the healthy options.
  5. Take time to de-stress. Stress causes spikes in cortisol, a hormone that makes you irrationally hungry, leaving you susceptible to sugar-laden snacks. When stressed, take a long, deep breath in for five seconds, hold, and then let it out to a count of five. Deep breathing is said to activate your vagus nerve, which properly regulates metabolism.bunny

Detox = Weight Loss

Take Out the Trash – Lose Weight!

Did you know that toxins make you fat? They keep you from losing weight even when you are dieting. If you are struggling to lose weight despite eating well and exercising, toxins may be interfering with your body’s metabolism. There’s a lot you can do when it comes to taking out your body’s trash.

Because of all the environmental pollution in our world and our occasional, or maybe continual, unwise food choices, our normal body processes can get overwhelmed. Toxic substances, mucus, and congestion get trapped in our tissues and tissue spaces. Our body attempts to protect us by enclosing toxins in mucus and fat cells. When toxins enter your body, it does what it’s designed to do—protect you and keep you alive. To do that, the body needs to get the chemicals away from your vital organs and delicate tissues. The safest place to store them is in your —you guessed it!—fat cells. Then it’s going to hang onto those little storage tanks to protect you. It will even make more fat cells to store toxic waste if it needs them. So you get fatter and feel more sluggish and tired as time goes by. The only way that you are going to get rid of the toxin-filled fat cells is to do a cleanse. When you drink the cleansing, detoxifying juices that I recommend, along with the herbal tinctures, your cells can let go of the toxins and your body can let go of the fat.

Voila! You start losing weight without a huge amount of effort. You also start feeling better.

It’s estimated that the average adult has between five and ten pounds of accumulated toxic waste in their cells, tissues, and organs, particularly the colon. (That’s five to ten pounds we could feel really great about dropping!) Toxic substances that accumulate throughout the body can weaken and congest our organs and systems of elimination and lead to diseases such as cancer. They also mess up our weight-loss goals. If we go on a very strict diet that forces the body to let go of fat cells for survival, the weight will come right back on when we stop the program.

Toxins can cause diabetes to boot? Reporting in the Lancet (2008) scientists revealed a disturbing fact: environmental toxins make you fat and cause diabetes(1). As the toxic bad guys roam around though out your body, these chemicals monkey with your ability to balance blood sugar and metabolize cholesterol. Over time, the changes can lead to insulin resistance. There are no drugs to treat it. The treatment is to cleanse your body.

Toxins make us sick; it’s now a proven fact. Market Watch Headline News yesterday sums it up: “Lifestyle gets blame for 70% to 90% of all cancers!” (2) A recent study published in Nature (2015) revealed that it is mostly environmental and external factors like smoking, drinking, diet, getting too much sun and exposure to toxic chemicals that cause cancer, rather than intrinsic factors like random cell mutations. Intrinsic factors accounted for just 10% to 30% of people’s lifetime risk of getting cancer, while extrinsic risks accounted for 70% to 90% for most common cancer types, the study showed. “Cancer risk is heavily influenced by extrinsic factors,” the study researchers, who work at Stony Brook University in New York, concluded.(3)

Looking at the information in the box below, you will notice that obesity or weight is listed for many different types of cancer. Why is that? I believe it’s because toxins are stored in fat cells and people who are overweight have a lot of toxicity hanging around to make them sick. This is something we all need to address, however, whether we are overweight or not. Cleansing our body will help us lose weight, but it will also help us prevent serious diseases down the road. Angel’s Story

“I had gotten psoriasis on my hands very badly from so many years of doing hair. When Cherie came to my salon and saw my hands, she gave me the carrot liver cleansing diet. She told me to do it once a month and possibly for 6 months. In one week my psoriasis on my hands was gone. It was amazing! She is awesome. All I can say is that I’m so happy to see all the information that she has given to so many people.”                                          —Angel

How To Heal Inflammation

How To Heal Inflammation

Our bodies are continually juggling a balancing act with inflammatory chemical assaults, while working hard to keep a delicate equilibrium under control. While some inflammation is beneficial in an acute setting (i.e. a swollen ankle after a sprain is important to stabilize it), chronic inflammation can have a negative impact on our health. Leading scientists are now showing the ties between inflammation to many types of chronic disease facing developed nations in pandemic proportions such as; heart disease, diabetes, auto-immune diseases — to even cancer.

Sources of inflammation are abundant in our environment and the lifestyles many of us live. What we eat, drink, breathe, and think every day affects our biochemistry in countless ways. On top of this, the myriad of microorganisms living in our gastrointestinal system impact us, all of which can heal or harm us with whatever consistent lifestyle choices we choose. The emerging field of Epigenetics is a powerful and exciting field of medicine showing how critical a role our environment plays on our genetics. Dr.’s like Bruce Lipton (author of The Biology of Belief) have proven that stress has the direct ability to change the ways our genes are activated, thus having a huge ability to influence our health. At the very base of our entire health spectrum is how we control inflammatory processes. What we put in, on, and around our body play a major role in how we look, think, and feel. And our diet has a major impact on our health.

To heal inflammation, avoid junk food, sugar and artificial sweeteners, all vegetable oils (use coconut oil and olive oil), heal your gut, and detoxify your body.  De-stress and learn to live from a happy heart. (This is one of my husband’s most popular classes at our retreats.)

Cherries Fight Arthritis, Gout, Inflammation

Cherries Fight Arthritis, Gout, Inflammation

Studies suggest that cherries may help reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA). Researchers at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center say 53 patients with knee OA who consumed two 8-ounce bottles of tart cherry juice daily reported a significant improvement in pain, stiffness, and physical function after six weeks. Each bottle of juice equaled about 45 cherries.  In a study of 633 participants, Boston University Medical Center researchers found that eating at least 10 cherries a day protected people with existing gout from recurrent attacks. The findings were published in a supplement to the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism.1 Dark cherries are packed with unique anthocyanins and other compounds that naturally mediate the inflammatory process. These compounds deliver anti-inflammatory activity equal to ibuprofen (Advil®) and naproxen (Aleve®)7—but without the significant side effects!2

Praise for Cherie’s Books

Praise for Cherie’s Books

I praise God and thank The Lord for Him leading me to your article in the Jan. 2015 Charisma Magazine.  It is answered prayer.  I said a prayer to God to please help me with this intense fatigue I have had, all I ever did and wanted to do was sleep and had no energy whatsoever in doing anything, such as housework and laundry was a MAJOR task for me.  I would go make the bed and right after making the bed, I went right into it and would sleep for hours. About a month ago, I decided to go into church thru the side door instead of the front door like I always do and there right smack in front of me on a table was the Charisma Mag “The Juice Lady” someone had put on the table for the taking, THAT WAS A MIRACLE right there, because I never go into church thru side door and I started reading and reading and then I ran out to bookstore and bought your books Anti-Inflammatory Diet and Juicing Fasting and Detoxing for Life.  I’ve been juicing now for about 3 days and took your quiz on Fatigue, I scored very intense, severe.  Praise God for the revelation.  Thank you Cherie you are a blessing.  All God.  God took me right to that mag and answered my prayers for better health.  I FEEL G R E A T since I cut out ALL that sugar and using organic fruits and veggies and I was able to get some things done around the house and feeling great this past weekend.  On top of that my foot, my ankle was very swollen and the swelling has gone down along with the pain.  I forgot how great it feels to be without pain in that ankle plus the limping from the pain which affected my hips, leg and lower back are almost gone. The morning blend 32 ozs. a day.  LOL when I drink 16ozs. in the am and 16ozs. in the afternoon, I can actually feel my body feeling better almost right away and I’m so happy. Thank you Jesus.  Can’t wait to receive my Remedies for Stress and Adrenal Fatigue book and the supplements for this fatigue.  I think I will be able to fly lol.  God’s Blessings.  Thank you again, my life will never be the same.  God’s not dead and answers prayer.  Be well Idalia

Sugar’s Bitter Truth

Sugar and Inflammation

For the last four decades, Americans have avoided fats and gorged on sugar. Sugar is a leading contributor to type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, MS, metabolic syndrome, and excessive weight gain.  It also increases the risk of heart disease, certain cancers, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis; actually nearly every disease has a link to sugar.

Sugar in the amount that the typical Americans eat (about 64 pounds a year) continually upsets our body chemistry and causes the inflammatory process that leads to disease. The less sugar you eat, the less inflammation, and the stronger your immune system, which defends us against infectious and degenerative diseases.

Excess sugar in the blood causes glycation, a process where a sugar molecule binds to a protein or a fat, and leads to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs are inflammatory; they are associated with type 2 diabetes, aging, and many diseases.

Don’t be fooled. Sugar is hidden in packaging in many different forms: high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup solids, sucrose, maltose, dextrose, fructose, glucose, galactose, lactose.  When a manufacturer wants to sweeten up a certain brand of cereal, for example, it can either do this using 15 grams of sugar, or, 5 grams of malt syrup, 5 grams of invert sugar, and 5 grams of glucose. Some manufacturers seem to be choosing this divide and masquerade method, placing these ingredients lower down on their products’ lists, making the public believe that the amount of sugar in the product is smaller than it is.

It’s all still sugar:  Cane juice, dehydrated cane juice, cane juice solids, cane juice crystals, dextrin, maltodextrin, dextran, barley malt, beet sugar, caramel, buttered syrup, carob syrup, brown sugar, date sugar, malt syrup, diatastic malt (enzymes that breakdown starch into sugar), fruit juice concentrate, dehydrated fruit juice, fruit juice crystals, golden syrup, turbinado, sorghum syrup, molasses, refiner’s syrup, ethyl malitol, maple syrup, yellow rock sugar, and sugar alcohols such as sorbitol and mannitol.

Healthy Alternative Sweeteners

  • Stevia (recommend Sweet Leaf Vanilla Creme)
  • Coconut sugar and coconut nectar
  • Small amounts of pure maple syrup
  • Small amounts of local raw honey

8 Reasons to Ditch Sugar

8  Reasons to Ditch Sugar

Here are a few TOP TIPS to help you shed those pounds and feel great:

  1. Sugar is a major contributor to inflammation. Inflammation is a top cause of heart disease and nearly all other diseases. You can read more about inflammation in my book The Juice Ladys Anti-Inflammation Diet.
  2. Sugar makes you fat.  It is loaded with calories that are stored in fat cells.
  3. Sugar will raise your cholesterol. For years we were told it was fat that raised our cholesterol, but sugar is worse.
  4. Sugar makes you nervous. There is a clear link between excess sugar and disorders like anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia, because of high levels of insulin and adrenalin that get released with sugar consumption
  5. Sugar causes diabetes, kidney and heart problems.  Excess sugar can damage the pancreas’s ability to function properly.
  6. Sugar destroys your teeth.  Sugar increases the bacteria in your mouth that erodes enamel. The biggest problem with many popular toothpastes is that they contain sugar. They are not required to put the sugar on the label.
  7. Sugar suppresses the immune system.  Sugar beats out vitamin C in your immune cells and weakens them.
  8. Sugar causes wrinkles. A high-sugar diet damages collagen, the layer just below the skin that gives you that youthful appearance.

Depression Is An Allergic Reaction To Inflammation

New Research Discovers That Depression Is An Allergic Reaction To Inflammation

Could depression actually be caused by what you eat?  Research would indicate that it is because diet is the leading cause of inflammation.

Health Science and the Human Brain (January 6, 2015) noted that new research reveals many cases of depression are actually caused by an allergic reaction to inflammation.  Tim de Chant of NOVA writes: “Inflammation is our immune system’s natural response to injuries, infections, or foreign compounds. When triggered, the body pumps various cells and proteins to the site through the blood stream, including cytokines, a class of proteins that facilitate intercellular communication.  It also happens that people suffering from depression are loaded with cytokines.”  Inflammation is caused by obesity, high sugar diets, high quantities of trans fats, and unhealthy diets in general, and along with stress.

By treating the inflammatory symptoms of depression — rather than the neurological ones — researchers and doctors are opening up an exciting new dimension in the fight against what has become a global epidemic.  There is evidence that omega 3 fatty acids and curcumin, an extract of the spice turmeric, might have similar effects as anti-inflammatory drugs. Also, ginger root, dark red cherries, blueberries, and hibiscus tea fight inflammation.

Eleanor Morgan of VICE adds: “Cytokines skyrocket during depressive episodes and, in those with bipolar disorder. The fact that ‘normal,’ healthy people can become temporarily anxious or depressed after receiving an inflammatory vaccine — like typhoid — lends further credence to the theory. There are even those who think we should re-brand depression altogether as an infectious disease.”1

Food and mood are definitely connected.  Sugar is one of the leading causes of the blues.  In 1975 William Duffy wrote the book Sugar Blues.  He was right on target — and that was back when we didn’t have sugar in just about everything we buy in a package.  Last week I returned a package of sliced organic turkey to the store because, to my utter surprise, I found it contained sugar.  Ever since our nation went on a get-rid-of-all-fat craze, we’ve been dumping sugar in just about everything.  Thus depression is soaring, along with diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Many people can eat and drink their way out of depression.  I’ve seen this firsthand as I’ve worked with people to change their diet and change their mood. You just need to know the inflammation causing foods and the ones that are anti-inflammatory.  I highly recommend that you get a copy of my latest book The Anti-Inflammation Diet.
