Can You Juice If You Are Diabetic?

I continue to hear people say that their doctor told them they could not juice because they have diabetes.  Many people think juice is synonymous with fruit juice.  Fruit juice is not what I recommend people juice, and especially anyone with diabetes or other sugar metabolism problems, with the exception of berries and lemon and lime.  You can add lemon and lime to any vegetable juice combination for flavor.

The Best Vegetables and Fruit to Juice for Diabetes

  1. Broccoli — a superhero for diabetics.  You can juice the stems—the parts most people throw away.  Steam the florets and juice the rest with veggies like carrot, cucumber, and celery. Broccoli is rich in a phytonutrient known as sulphoraphane, which promotes an anti-inflammatory process that improves blood sugar control.
  2. Wild blueberries. A study by the USDA showed that people who “consumed 2 1/2 cups of wild blueberry juice per day for 12 weeks lowered their blood glucose levels, lifted depression, and improved their memories. Researchers credit these results to anthocyanins in the berries, a natural chemical that shrinks fat cells and also stimulates the release of adiponectin, a hormone that regulates blood glucose levels, among other things. Increasing adiponectin levels can help keep blood sugar low and increase our sensitivity to insulin.”1
  3. A British study found that people who had a serving of spinach or other leafy green every day, cut their risk of diabetes by 14 percent compared  with those that ate less than half that amount.
  4. Collard greens. Collards are a good source of vitamin C, which helps to lower cortisol and thereby reduces inflammation. It is also a good source of alpha lipoid acid (ALA), a nutrient that helps us deal with stress.  “When scientists at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University gave aging rats ALA, they found that the animals’ bodies created their own antioxidants, making them better able to resist toxins in the environment, and to reduce inflammation. ALA also helps reduces blood sugar and can help to strengthen the nerves damaged by diabetic neuropathy.”2 If you are cooking the greens don’t overcook it, which creates a strong sulfur smell. Five minutes of steaming or sautéing is all you need.

Yes Cherie this is what the doctor says no fruit unless it is strawberries or blueberries for diabetics. No watermelon, no pineapple and a bunch of other no’s.

I asked my DO the other day, how much training did you get in nutrition when you went to school, he told me very little. Anything he knows now is what he has learned on his own. I thought DO’s had more knowledge than the MD’s. However, he told me now in school they are doing more in teaching this subject.

Since I started juicing I have lost 12 lbs. Thanks for your advice! I love your book Sugar Knockout. I recommended on my FB page.

    • One study that I quoted recently showed that 2 1/2 cups blueberry juice was very helpful for diabetics. Congratulations on your 12 lb weight loss. So glad you are enjoying Sugar Knockout.

Hello my dear Cherie. Thank you for continuing to serve us with good wholesome information on juicing. Can you give me some information on vitamin D deficiency? The doctor have been treating my husband for type 2 diabetes. He is constantly losinng weight. The doctor says he is very very vitamin D deficient. He is now taking 2,000IU vitamin D per day. Can you suggest a juice to help increase his D level. Please Respond if you will ASAP.

    • Marine,
Vit D is very important to our health. Many people are deficient. I’m glad your husband is supplementing with vitamin D. Sunflower seeds contain vitamin D. Cod liver oil is rich in D along with oil fish like salmon. Mushrooms and eggs are a good source. There are any veggies that are rich in D, but you can consume sunflower sprouts and you can juice them. Make sure your husband is taking vitamin D3.Also, he needs to expose his skin to the sun each day for 15 to 30 minutes, preferably in the morning or later in the afternoon when it is not as hot.

    • Beatrice,
The way to alkalize your body is to eat lots of vegetables. They are very alkaline. In addition, juicing veggies is excellent. They are broken down and the nutrients are easily absorbed. Juice lots of dark leafy greens. I highly recommend you get my book The Juice Lady’s Remedies for Diabetes. Why don’t you join my 30-day detox challenge coming up July 11. That would be a good step. Please thank your doctor for the referral. Happy juicing!
