Try These 5 Healthy Foods to Add Pep!

1. Watercress

This cruciferous vegetable is considered the healthiest food on earth. William Patterson University conducted a study that ranked watercress as #1 with a perfect score for the healthiest food. They looked at levels of key nutrients and found watercress to be the best overall in providing a wide variety of nutrients. Many studies have looked at fruit and vegetables and called them superstars for being high in one nutrient. But it is a variety of nutrients that are important for overall health, watercress got the top score. The study was published in the CDC’s journal Preventing Chronic Disease. (1)  The study looked at folate, vitamin D, vitamin A, potassium, and protein, based on a 2,000-calorie per day diet, Watercress came in first, followed by Chinese cabbage and chard was third. Watercress has more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk, and more folate than a banana. One study showed that there was a 22% reduction in breast cancer for women who consumed adequate folate. 2. Wheatgrass juice

Apigenin was found to inhibit the initiation, progression, and metastasis of tumors. Apigenin has been found to inhibit angiogenesis, thus depriving tumors of blood, oxygen, and nutrients they need to survive. Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels.  Apigenin interferes with molecular signaling, decreasing the production of chemicals needed by cancer cells. The process of angiogenesis is controlled by chemical signals in the body. That is what we want to stop, so whether you have cancer or just want to prevent it, celery is important to include in your juice recipes.

Celery Lemonade

  • 3-4 ribs celery
  • 1 lemon
  • 1/2 green apple

Juice all ingredients, stir, and enjoy.
