Turmeric Juice for Diabetes, Arthritis, G.I, & Cancer

The main component of turmeric is curcumin, which has been show to have powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It is effective in helping a variety of conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, gastrointestinal problems, and cancer.

Diabetes

You can lower blood sugar and reverse insulin resistance with turmeric. A 2009 study published in Biochemistry and Biophysical Research Communications showed how supplementing with turmeric can help reverse diabetes. The study found that curcumin is literally 400 times more potent than a common diabetes drug in activating AMPK, which improves insulin sensitivity and helps reverse Type 2 Diabetes. Curcumin has also been proven to help reverse many of the issues related to insulin resistance and hyperglycemia. Also, one of the most common complications of diabetes is damaged blood vessels, which cause blindness. A study found that supplementing with curcumin can delay this complication because of turmeric’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Arthritis

A study with 45 rheumatoid arthritis patients compared the benefits of curcumin in turmeric to arthritis drugs, which put people at risk of developing leaky gut and heart disease. The study split these volunteers into three groups: curcumin treated, drug treated (diclofenac sodium), and a combination of the two. The curcumin group showed the highest percentage of improvement in overall Disease Activity Scores. The curcumin treated scores were significantly better than the patients in the drug group. And the best part was that the curcumin treatment was determined to be safe and demonstrated no adverse effects. This study provided the first evidence for the superiority of curcumin treatment in patients with active RA.1

Cancer

A number of laboratory studies on cancer have shown that curcumin clearly has anticancer effects. It appears to kill cancer cells and prevent more from growing. It has shown the best effects on breast cancer, bowel cancer, stomach cancer and skin cancer. A 2007 study that combined curcumin with chemotherapy to treat bowel cancer showed that the combined treatment killed more cancer cells than the chemotherapy alone. Studies have also shown that curcumin stops cancer development, growth, and spread. Researchers have also reported that curcumin blocked the formation of cancer-causing enzymes in rodents. And it has shown the ability to reduce tumor size and kill cancer cells.

Gastrointestinal Problems

Many people with digestive and stomach issues become intolerant to medications because the stomach flora is compromised and drugs can literally tear up the mucosal lining. An in-depth look at all the studies evaluating curcumin’s ability to manage inflammatory bowel disease (IBS, Crohn’s disease, and Ulcerative Colitis) found that many people were able to stop taking their prescribed corticosteroids because their condition improved dramatically by taking curcumin.

Corticosteroids reduce the pain symptoms for people with IBD, but they damage the intestinal lining over time actually making the condition worse. But supplementing with curcumin did not have side effects but rather helped heal the gut and supported the growth of good bacteria (probiotics).

Turmeric for Healthy Skin

This bright yellow spice gets its health benefits from curcumin, the bioactive component of turmeric. Turmeric’s various antioxidants and anti-inflammatory components can provide a healthy glow and luster to your skin that comes from the inside. Turmeric is one of those spices that can revive your skin and get rid of a dull winter complexion. And if you add turmeric to your juice and apply as a face mask so you can get your glow back twice as fast.

Helps Heal Wounds

You may also be interested in knowing that turmeric can help heal wounds because it is an anti-inflammatory. By incorporating it, your wounds will heal more quickly. Studies have found that turmeric can positively affect tissue and collagen as well.  (http://www.sunshinebotanicals.com/blog/top-5-herbs-that-firm-loose-skin/)

Psoriasis

Turmeric is useful for psoriasis by helping to control flare-ups. Researchers have found that turmeric can obstruct the inflammatory enzymes linked to psoriasis. It can also lower the levels of cytokines, which stimulate cell inflammation and might eventually lead to psoriasis.

Helps Acne

The antibacterial properties of turmeric aid in acne treatment and prevention of scarring. And its anti-inflammatory properties treat the inflammation caused by pimples.

Prevents Wrinkles

A Japanese study found that turmeric can prevent the formation of wrinkles and melanin. It also prevents the reduction in skin elasticity caused by chronic UVB exposure. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19577913)

Reduces Skin Pigmentation

Turmeric has bleaching properties that help reduce skin pigmentation. Mix one teaspoon turmeric powder with one teaspoon of lemon juice. Leave on skin for 20 minutes. Do not go out into the sun for at least an hour. Wash off with cool water.

Helps Reduce Excessive Facial Hair

This condition is caused by hormonal imbalances. Applying turmeric to the skin and taking it orally can be helpful.

Thank you for the excellent article regarding curcurmin. It is very helpful !!!

  2. Should the turmeric, ginger, lemon juice be consumed more than once a day? If so, can a larger batch be made and consumed over two or three days?

    • You can make the turmeric shots ahead for a couple of days. You may consume several shots in a day.

  3. Could you use a blender or does the drink have to be extracted from a juice machine?

    • Some people have used blenders. You could try it. I think a juicer makes a better drink.

  4. I read your article about turmeric juice fast. Are these ingredients mixed with water? If so how much? My concern after reading if the ingredients just straight like it seem to suggest would make my stomach ache and get upset.

    • You can mix with 4-6 oz water. Some people do well with drinking it straight.

  5. Love the article. I mix a bit of tumeric in my hot tea each night before bed. How do you store the tumeric root (cold, room temp, etc?) How long will it last?

    • I store it in the refrigerator. I use mine up within a week. It will last longer than that.
